Juicing is a healthy way to ensure you are consuming the daily recommended requirement of fruits and vegetables. In families with children, a juicer is an effective way to make sure your children are consuming the vegetables they need for a healthy body and strong bones. Juicing is the perfect way to mask the taste of vegetables. The key to successful juicing is to find a juicer that is powerful, functional, and easy to use. The Green Star GS-1000 Juice Extractor meets and exceeds that criteria.
Pressing Yields Better Juice Then Shredding
The distinct advantage of the Green Star GS-1000 Juice Extractor is the ceramic material and magnets used in the twin-gear system. Traditional centrifugal juicers use rotating blades that can destroy a significant amount of nutrients in vegetables and fruits due to the impact and heat produced during the juicing process. The magnetic twin-gear design in the Green Star prevents excess heat and presses the juice out of the vegetables and fruit instead of shredding your produce to extract the juice.
The instructions of blade juicers indicate the juice should not be stored for more than 24-hours. The twin-gear magnetic system in the Green star juicer extends the storage time to 48-hours. Oxidation is delayed by the pressing system instead of the aerating system used in centrifugal juicers. This is a phenomenal feature for those who may not have the time to juice every day.
You Get Two Appliances In One
A wonderful and useful feature of the GS-1000 is that it doubles as a food processor and juice extractor. It is two appliances in one, which makes it an attractive juicer for those who want to minimize the amount of appliances in the kitchen. The extractor comes with several food-processing attachments that are easy to switch out when needed. This extractor can be used to process whole foods such as nuts or it can be used to make baby foods and frozen desserts. For those who love to bake pies with delectable crusts using chopped nuts such as almonds or pecans, the extractor comes with a homogenizing blade, also called a “blank” that is perfect for making nut butters.
Juice Everything From Spinach to Oranges
When you are not using this device as a food processor, you can use it to make a variety of delicious juices. While many extractors are not designed for leafy vegetables such as spinach, the Green Star GS-1000 Juice Extractor makes juicing leafy greens easy. This allows you to use a broad variety of vegetables in your juice recipes.
Spinach, wheatgrass, and parsley are difficult to juice in many traditional juicing machines. With the GS-1000, you are able to include these nutrient-dense greens in your homemade concoctions. However, to maximize the potential of the GS-100 I recommend that you purchase the additional coarse screen to accompany the fine screen that comes with the device. The coarse screen is better suited for juicing soft fruits such as oranges.
You Get Some Accessories That Are Very Useful
The device comes with a wooden plunger, plastic plunger and cleaning brush. The plungers are used to push the foods through the processor. Unfortunately, the plungers do become damaged with use as you push the foods into the magnetic twin gear system. However, the damage is minimal as long as you are careful not to push the plunger too deep. I like to use wooden plunger because even though you don’t necessarily want to eat it, wood is organic, unlike plastic. So it won’t harm you if tiny pieces get in your juice.
The cleaning brush is helpful when cleaning the device, although most users recommend soaking some of the removable device parts in soap and water. The brush is not particularly helpful when cleaning the fine mesh-juicing screen. The best method for cleaning the screen is a coarse sponge.
Assembly Required
For those who have used centrifugal blade juicers, the number of parts on the Green Star GS-1000 Juice Extractor may not be ideal. While all juicers require you to take them apart to clean, the traditional juicers will have three or four parts to clean. The GS-1000 has seven parts that need to be cleaned after each use. Fortunately, the device disassembles easily for a quick clean up. Once cleaned, the device is just as easy to assemble. The only piece that requires scrubbing is the juicing screen.
Slow, Steady and Quiet
The Green Star GS-1000 Juice Extractor is quieter than most blade juicers. The GS-1000 runs at a slower speed to prevent excess heat. For those who are used to fast and furious juicing, the lower speed may seem cumbersome. However, the low speed prevents the produce from heating up, which prevents the loss of vital nutrients. The juice produced is healthier than the juice produced in fast blade juicers. For those who feel the quality of the juice is more important than the speed of the machine, the GS-1000 is the best choice.
More Subtle than a Big Mouth
The mouth of the Green Star GS-1000 Juice Extractor is not quite large enough to push an average size apple through it. While many juicers are designed with a wide mouth to minimize the necessary preparation time, the GS-1000 will require you to cut up some of your fruits and vegetables depending on the size. You may not be able to drop a whole apple in the mouth, however, if you cut the apple in half it will likely fit. The preparation time is minimal compared to the simple fact the juice extracted from this device can be stored for 48 hours.
If you want the most nutrient-dense juice possible, the Green Star GS-1000 Juice Extractor is a fantastic choice. While it may not be the fastest juicer on the market, slow and steady does produce exceptional juice. In addition, it doubles as a food processor. The capabilities of this device can be expanded by purchasing additional attachments such as the pasta maker.
With a five-year warranty, the Green Star GS-1000 Juice Extractor is an incredible value. It is slower than a centrifugal juicer, however, you will have to juice less often since you can make your juice every other day instead of every day. You will no longer need a juicer specifically designed for leafy vegetables such as spinach or wheatgrass. The Green Star GS-1000 Juice Extractor can juice a variety of produce and whole foods.
The Good
- Fantastic for leafy greens: The Green Star GS-1000 is ideally suited for leafy greens like spinach, celery, or kale. It can really pull the juice out of these vegetables.
- Very dry pulp: The end result, dry pulp, shows how efficient this juicer is. You can even feed the pulp back into the Green Star to extract even more juice.
- Comes with a nice wooden food pusher: I don’t like to use a lot of plastic tools with my food so having a wooden, FDA approved food pusher is a great bonus for me.
- Great for wheatgrass: The GS-1000 can handle wheatgrass with no problems.
- Very, very quiet: As you can tell from the video above, you can hardly hear this juicer running.
- 5-year warranty: This is an excellent warranty and a big testament to the quality of this product.
The Bad
- Lots of parts to clean: Although disassembly of this machine is not that difficult, it does have a lot of parts with many nooks and crannies to clean.
- Requires some muscle: If you have some joint problems or not a lot of arm strength, then you may want to opt for another machine. The GS-1000 doesn’t have any fast cutting blades so you have to muscle some of the fruits and vegetables into it using the wood pusher. Cutting the ingredients into smaller pieces can help in the process.
- A little slow: Not nearly as fast as a centrifugal juicer, but the advantage to slow is that the juice heats up less and less foam is produced, making the juice healthier, more stable, and longer-lasting.
